Who We Are

The Just Peace Institute was established in 1994 in College Station, Texas, by members of the Friends Congregational Church (UCC), to embrace an interfaith, community-based ministry of peace and justice. It grew out of long-standing concerns and commitment to an open and inclusive theology of peace and justice. The JPI mission is to bring people together by encouraging tolerance and to seek personal, communal, and global peace through social justice and environmental stewardship.

JPI maintains its partnership with Friends Congregational Church and is open to persons of all denominations, faith traditions and to those who do not subscribe to any formal religious doctrine. It is with that foundation of inclusiveness that we welcome all people who feel a personal or spiritual call to work for sustainable peace.

We strive to be a light for justice in the Brazos Valley. As such, we make a visible and shining force for social and religious tolerance, we celebrate diversity, and we work with commitment toward tearing down the walls of misunderstanding, prejudice, and fear that divide our world, replacing them with unity through acceptance.

We have embarked on this journey for personal and social justice, and to do so has deepened our spiritual commitment. We invite all who wish for a just peace to join us and make this journey their own.

Friends Just Peace Institute is a recipient of the 1999 Circles of Peace Award. The Award is presented annually by the Institute for Peace and Justice headquartered in St. Louis. The award recognizes Friends Just Peace Institute in College Station, Texas, for creating a musical play, using the resource "Families Creating a Circle of Peace." The play, "Finding the Key," was performed by the 'magineers of 'magination Station Theatre and was performed at local schools during Spring Semester 1998, at a community-wide children's literacy festival held at the George Bush Presidential Library Complex Plaza ("Project Bookmark: Making Your Mark on Literacy") on March 28, 1998, and a public performance was held at Friends Congregational Church on April 18, 1998. The play was written and produced by local playwright, Randy Wilson. Funding for producing "Finding the Key" was provided by the Brazos Valley Youth Grants Program.

The peace fund is available to all who wish to make a monetary contribution to our work. In addition to donations, the Institute actively seeks funding, including grants from the United Church of Christ, Interfaith Hunger Appeal, and the National Institute of Peace.
